Kentucky Thoroughbreds – Presidents
Dear Snowbirds… in the mid-1970’s I was working my way through college at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I worked as a mechanic at a service station just off Interstate 65. I noticed every year in late October all the Michigan license plates coming into the station for service. They were heading south to Florida for the winter. In late March the following year I noticed many of the same travelers I had helped in the fall were now returning home. I affectionately referred to these travelers as “snowbirds”. Whether coming or going, these travelers were very nice, but always in a hurry to get to their destination.
As I pondered upon the snowbird’s activity, I realized they had reached the time in their lives when they could drop what they were doing and head back home or to a more suitable climate for a few months away from Michigan’s blowing cold of wintertime. Geographically speaking, Kentucky is roughly half-way between Michigan and Florida.
I asked myself… “why wouldn’t our snowbirds stop and spend a few days in Kentucky”? In fact, why wouldn’t anyone traveling through Kentucky stop and spend a few days in the Bluegrass? Maybe it’s because they didn’t realize all that Kentucky has to offer?! Well, now that my wife and I are President of the NKK Kentucky Thoroughbred Chapter we have a message for Snowbirds, or anyone who is just passing through… STOP!!
Kentucky has more to offer than you might realize. Over the next few months and years, it will be our mission to trumpet all that is Kentucky. We have three rallies planned in our lovely state in 2024. The first rally (Region Six Directors) will be in May in Georgetown. Think: bourbon, the Ark Encounter, thoroughbred horses and the beautiful “Old Friends” horse farm. The second rally (Presidents) will be held in early September at 4 Guys RV Park in the Red River Gorge in Stanton, Kentucky. Think: natural beauty with breathtaking views and scenery, hiking, fishing and peaceful walks. The third rally (State Directors) will be held just a few miles south of Louisville, in Bardstown. Think: Bourbon Trail Distilleries, Churchill Downs and Louisville’s designation as one of the best “food towns” in the United States.
As you can see, we have some great rallies planned in 2024. We hope you will schedule a Kentucky rally or two. We also hope you will STOP and stay awhile the next time you’re heading this way. Take it from this old mechanic… you’ll just love our beautiful state!!
