West Virginia Traveling Mountaineers
Spring is on the horizon, and we are looking forward to another camping season. The Region Six Rally, May 1 is our first planned destination. We are looking forward to returning to Whispering Hills, a beautiful campground, and spending time with old and new friends. We are particularly looking forward to visiting the Kentucky Horse Park, the Retired Racehorse Farm, and the Bourbon Trail will be fun too.
Two weeks later, we will be attending the West Virginia Traveling Mountaineers chapter rally at Watoga State Park. The star attraction of the Watoga Rally will be a trip to Green Bank Observatory to view the world’s largest fully steerable telescope. This facility houses eight telescopes including the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope which is 330 feet in diameter. The telescope weighs almost 17 million pounds and stands over 485 feet above ground level. Green Bank also is the center of the National Radio Quiet Zone which was established in 1958. It is an area where there are no cellphones allowed because of interference with the radio signals received by the telescope. If you would like to join us, go to the NKK website for more information. This is a zero cost rally. You only pay the camping fee to the state of West Virginia. https://newmarkountryklub.com/event/west-virginia-traveling-mountaineers-may-rally/
We’d love to have you join us.
Beth is busily putting together themed Vera Bradly prizes for our annual Lions Club Bingo. This is the 13th year we have had this Lions Club activity and, so far, we have made over $65,000.00. We use the money to purchase Weekly Readers for every student in Jane Lew School. We also sponsor a Safety Fair in the fall where kids learn about school bus safety, boat safety, fire safety, have their eyes tested, be fingerprinted by the FBI, and other free activities. At Christmas time, we sponsor a Santa’s House where children get a free photo with Santa, some candy and small presents, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, and participate in some family activities.
By the time you read this, Bill should have had cataract operations on both eyes. He is looking forward to seeing better, as computer work has become a challenge.
We have already received several reservations for our West Virginia State Three Festivals Rally, which will be held over the Labor Day weekend. We’d love to have you join us. See the NKK website for details.
