Larry & Patsy Wood (12255-L)
Region Three Directors
In July, we traveled to Mountain View, Arkansas, for their State Rally. Our State Directors, Larry & Myra Markley had organized a great rally. We camped at the Ozark RV Park and Country Store. Unfortunately for us, our motor home was in the shop waiting for parts for the air conditioner. We were able to rent a travel trailer on the campground. That experience made us realize how fortunate we are to have a Newmar—even though it is 20 years old. We can now laugh about the challenges we faced in the travel trailer. The bed was so tall that Patsy couldn’t decide whether to run and jump into bed (she doesn’t jump very high these days—or run very fast) or to wedge herself between the wall and the bed and walk her feet up the wall and then shove herself backwards once she reached the top of the bed. (It wasn’t a pretty sight.) Fortunately, the second night we were able to obtain a step stool from the camp hosts.
One morning we carpooled to Blanchard Springs to see a cave that we had never heard about. Their only advertisement is by “word of mouth.” What a wonderful surprise! The tour took about an hour. The walkway was paved and had rails throughout the cavern. There were two spots with bleachers where we stopped to rest and to listen to the guides. The cave had lots of interesting features—and a very active bat population. Although it was a very hot day, the temperature inside the cave was about 58 degrees. If you are ever in this part of Arkansas, we highly recommend that you visit this cavern.
Mountain View is well known for the blue grass music, and we were able to enjoy an evening listening to Pam Setser, a very talented local artist. On Saturday we all visited the Ozark Folk Center, a lovely area with craft shops showcasing locally made products, such as stained glass, quilting, knives, wood working, etc. And, of course, there were musicians!
In August, we traveled to Abilene, Kansas, for another State Rally. One of the highlights was the visit to the Greyhound Hall of Fame. The Kansas people are known for their good cooking, and this rally did not disappoint. On Thursday and Saturday, the meat dish was provided by our hosts, and the rest brought side dishes. Yum! We have been informed that this will be the last year that Darrell & Jeanette will serve as State Directors due to Jeanette’s illness. They have done a wonderful job. Please keep them in your prayers.
We are also losing our State Directors from Missouri, Dave & Barbara Burtrum. We will be joining them in Carthage, Missouri, in October for their state rally. They, too, have done a great job and have been wonderful to work with. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
Speaking of changes, we also will be stepping down at the end of 2023. After ten years, it feels like it is time for someone else to have the fun and reap the benefits of being Region Three Directors. We have enjoyed everything about the Klub—especially the friends we have made along the way.
