December 2017

Hey y’all! Tis the season to celebrate, and with our diverse membership, some may be celebrating holidays many of us have never heard of. Meeting fellow RVers is just one of the things that make this lifestyle so interesting and enjoyable for us. As we enter this season, here are some of the events and celebrations that are observed across these great United States:

  • Saint Nicholas Day (Christian)
  • St. Lucia Day (Swedish)
  • Christmas Day (Christian)
  • Hanukkah (Jewish)
  • Omisoka (Japanese)
  • Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexican)
  • Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish)
  • Three Kings Day/Epiphany (Christian)
  • Kwanzaa (African American)
  • Yule (Pagan)

Tis also the season to look back at what we have accomplished in 2017 as we look forward to what we want to accomplish in the coming year(s). In a word – WOW! It’s been a busy year for many of our members, Gayle and me included. We began our roles as NKK Tarheels president and secretary not knowing what to expect, but excited to learn – and man, have we done some learning! Over the last year, we have been on the road about ten months of it. We have attended six rallies, hosted two member lunches, traveled slightly over 12,000 miles (not including the non-RV trip to London, Scotland and Ireland 😊), met a LOT of new friends, welcomed TWENTY new members into the chapter (WOW) … and eaten WAY too much!

Hey y’all! It is Fall, so it must be RALLY TIME!

After enjoying a couple of “cozy” member lunches in August and five days around Washington DC in early September, Gayle and I were excited to join the Virginia Wheels and South Carolina Palmetto Pals for the Tri-State Mayberry Rally in Mt. Airy, NC. The rally was a ton of fun and the North Carolina mountains were cool and relaxing. Following the rally, 5-10 coaches (the numbers fluctuated) caravanned towards Sedalia MO … with stops in West Memphis AR and Branson MO … to attend the Newmar International Rally. Thanks to Roger and Peggy Weeks for coordinating that effort and guiding us safely to Sedalia.

Speaking of Sedalia and thanks – THANK YOU to Bob and Bonnie Krieger for all your planning and behind-the-scenes work, and to all of you wonderful Tarheels who volunteered and helped to make the Newmar International Rally another huge success. I am particularly thankful that Gayle and I love our Dutch Star, because helping to set-up the new 2018 coaches really heightened our awareness of the new features and luxuries being offered by Newmar and how much attention they pay to their customers’ suggestions. I don’t know about you, but when people ask what kind of motorhome we have, it gives me a sense of pride to tell them we own a Newmar.

Hey y’all! There must be some truth to the old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun. ”Gayle and I have sure had a LOT of fun traveling through these beautiful United States–PLUS London, Ireland and Scotland, but it’s hard to believe we are already in the third quarter of the year. I believe that calls for a Newmar party!   We’ll start with a couple of Member Lunches in August. Mark your calendar and plan to gather for lunch with your fellow NC Tarheels at Julia’s Talley House Restaurant in Troutman on the 16th and/or at McCall’s BBQ & Seafood Restaurant in Clayton on the 22nd. Both get-togethers start at 11:30 AM and are “Dutch treat”. Please let us know which one(s) you plan to attend.
